On one occasion the conductor started the choir, then without warning them he flamboyantly departed the stage, they didn't miss a beat. Linda Phillips, the Age music critic, rated them the best male choir in Melbourne in (my memory) 1956. His name was Janis Upe, he arrived in the UK in 1947 but before that was in a DP camp in Hollendorf and the POW camp Zedelgem before that. I have some photos from this camp. Fortunately he marked the backs of these photos with "Hallendorf" so I can be certain they are from there. He never mentioned whether the Hallendorf DP camp was divided up into different nationalities, but I can see from a brief first look at your website here that the Latvians had a specific section or maybe even a separate camp. I know from reading that the large camp at Rimini on the Adriatic coast of Italy was divided up according to nationalities, so maybe this was common practice. I am going to look further into your website to see if I can post some of my father's pictures of Hallendorf DP camp here. <br /><br />Thank you for your fascinating site and research - it's good to see some recognition and appreciation of the struggles which that generation of people went through to escape persecution. I just googled Pēteris Pirtnieks and e...Hi Michael,<br />I just googled Pēteris Pirtnieks and ended up on your blog.<br />Of all deported Pirtnieks from Latvia http://www.itl.rtu.lv/LVA/dep1941/meklesana49.php?rinda=0 (found by entering Pirtnieks in the Vārds field), these people might be Pēteris, his wife Katrīna, sons Dainis and Jānis, and Pēteris' mother Maiga. <br />Here is another church book entry indicating that Pēteris' mother was Maiga:<br />http://www.lvva-raduraksti.lv/lv/menu/lv/2/ig/1/ie/87/book/4188.html (screen-shot 133, entry 61).<br /><br />My great-great-great grandpa was Pēteris Pirtnieks from Nīca, the same town as this family.
